France’s Strasbourg Christmas Market is open for the 2021 season, which is a step up from last year’s European decision to shut down all Christmas markets. However, there are some changes and precautions taking place to attend the market this year. So, whether it’s your first time in the city or you’re a regular Christmas market goer, here’s a rundown of what to expect:
- The center of the city (beyond the canal) is blocked from vechials entering
- The police are checking large bags as people come through the gated entries
- Most people are wearing face masks while walking through the city and into the different christmas markets
- Signs state that open eating and drinking is unauthorized
- There are desingated eating and drinking areas
- One will be asked to scan their european vaccination QR code to enter a desingated outside eating/drinking area
Even though these measures are in place, they didn’t keep the crowds from enjoying the festive atmosphere at the famous Strasbourg Christmas Market.
Why is the Strasbourg Christmas Market famous?
They call it the Capital of Christmas because it dates back to 1570. History notes the Strasbourg Christmas Market as being the first-ever in France and one of the first throughout Europe. This Alsatian region has a german influence and its own dialect.
At the Strasbourg Christmas Market, you’ll find over 300 chalets selling Christmas toys, decorations, homemade crafts, and a mix of food and drinks in the ten markets throughout the city. Many come to see the markets among the picturesque half-timbered houses.
Grab a cup of mulled wine, enjoy a crepe with Nutella, or try the Alsatian Flammekueche: a toasted flatbread with a spread of cream cheese and onions or lardons.
There are also several chestnut trains parked in the city.
When to go to the market
The market runs from November 25 to December 26, 2021. The stall opening hours are from 11 am to 8 pm every day, except on Christmas eve, Christmas, and the closing day after. These three days have special operating hours.
