How to do long-term travel without compromising on fashion

Fashion and travel are two of my favorite things and I love planning the perfect outfit for my trips.

However, when going on a long-term trip you are limited to space in your suitcase, so you’ll have to be more creative with what you pack – but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise on fashion!

Here are my top tips.

Avoid looking like a tourist

Nothing says ‘fashion’ less like dressing in various tourist cliches. Stay away from things like ugg boots, zip-off pants, multi-pocket vests and Thai Fisherman pants – all rightly labeled as tourist fashion crimes by 1Cover.

These all scream ‘tourist’!

Accessorize

The best way to make an outfit look like new is to add a statement necklace, hat, scarf or bag to create a whole look. Mixing up your accessories is an easy way to take an outfit from one place to another (for example, from sightseeing to drinks at the bar) and it takes up a lot less space than more clothes.

Create a capsule wardrobe for every occasion

Think about what you will be doing on your trip. For example, sightseeing, hiking, going out for meals, etc. and try to mix and match items to create outfits for each of these like creating a capsule wardrobe. As much as you might just want to pack all of your favorite pieces, you are unlikely to be able to make different outfits with them all. Choose to be a little more strategic. Avoid having anything in your case that you will only wear once.

Be creative

Something like a silk scarf can be used as a belt, a headband, a wrap, a top or a bow. It will be quick to dry and is super light. Versatile items that can be utilized in more than one way are certainly worth a place in your case.

Think about the weather

If you are traveling for a long time, you might find yourself experiencing different temperatures, which will require different clothes. To get around this, make sure you have plenty of layering pieces that you can wear on their own when it is warmer, and layer up to keep you warm in the colder weather.

You don’t need that many pairs of shoes!

Don’t get me wrong, I love shoes, but they take up a lot of space in a suitcase that you could use for other things. You only really need one pair of heels, in a neutral color that will go with anything you have packed, some comfortable walking shoes, a sandal and maybe some flip-flops. If you are going somewhere where it is likely to snow, perhaps some snow boots, although if you aren’t going to encounter a lot of snow, it might be better to rent them somewhere local when you need them. There are also some clever shoe packing tips and tricks that will help save some space in your case if you really need to take a couple more pairs!

When traveling, you probably want to take a whole bunch of pictures to show friends and family back home, and of course, you want to look your best.

Luckily, there’s a way to stay fashionable, even when you can only wear what fits in your luggage!

  1. Great Tips!! I am a simple packer. I take what i need and nothing extra lol. Plus it gives me a reason to buy something if I need it!

  2. These are great tips for preparing for travel . I appreciate the reminder that less is more and I don’t need to take much…

  3. When it comes to shoes, less is more! So much easier to find 2 pairs of shoes that are comfortable yet stylish!
