Visit Miss Liberty and Ellis Island

Last summer, after finding out I was getting a new job and losing my flexibility with time, I took a spur of the moment trip home to the states. Stopping in New Jersey to see my in-loves (in-laws).

They are some amazing people and super sweet all around, but to top it off they took me to see Miss Liberty and Ellis Island for my firsty (:

The whole day I was drawn in by New York’s skyline and dreamed of getting this particular shot… and I did!!

I absolutely love NYC; it is one of my favorite cities in the world! But apart from the city, I recommend seeing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

We took the ferry from New Jersey’s side and ordered our tickets from this website. There’s also a ferry that departs from NYC, so it’s convenient from where you’re located.

Miss New Jersey

I highly suggest you arrive an hour before your desired schedule departure because of the security checks and long lines. When it is time for the ferry to leave you don’t want to be left behind, waiting an hour before you can get on the next one. Both New Jersey and NYC have five departures each day leaving on the hour starting at 9am and ending at 1pm.

Up first, Ellis Island.

I didn’t know what to expect of the museum, but boy did it blow my mind away! I learned an incredible amount of American history and about its immigration.  I walked on the grounds where my great grandparents arrived, during Ellis Island’s operational period 1892-1954, from Italy to settle in the United States. It was an amazing and eyeopening experience.

When you first walk into the Museum, you’re directed to pick up a free headset (they have them in all major languages). Throughout the different rooms and levels of the museum you’re able to enter number codes into your headset and hear information regarding the visual experience of each room.

I never knew how severe and complicated it was to enter the United States in those days. The testimonies from different immigrants truly brought the whole walkthrough to life. If you’re American, or just interested, this is a must do because, wow, I have a greater appreciation now knowing the scrutiny my ancestors went through.

The museum is pretty lengthy and time consuming, so make sure you give yourself enough time, and don’t forget to look at the ferry departure signs right outside the museum to schedule accordingly.

Next, Meeting Miss Liberty!

Miss Liberty

It was nice to see her in all her glory, but I was bummed to not get the chance to go up into her crown. The tickets were sold out and completely booked from July (the month I was there) into October. Crazy. She is one popular lady!

We had a blast enjoying her gigantic stance. There’s also a park near her and some food trucks if you get hungry.

What a beautiful and educational day it was visiting Miss Liberty and Ellis Island, until next time New York 🙂
