Postojnska Jama Caves and Castle

Postojnska Jama park is in the Slovenian town of Postojna and home to one of the largest caves in Europe.

Postojna Cave

Since this cave is 24, 340 meters long, the first way to explore it is by riding a railway train.

The train made a cave debut in 1870.

Once inside the cave, the local guide will give a foot tour around some of its most spectacular sights,

explaining the formations and their ages.

The city of Postojna even uses this cave to host events and parties.

They made one of the large open areas into a lighted ballroom.

Would you get married here?  Some people do!

Close to the end of the tour, catch a sight of the baby dragons that call this cave home.

It’s banned to take photographs, but here’s a glimpse from Postojna Cave’s YouTube page.

Postojnska Jama: The Predjama Castle

Postojnska Jama park also hosts the Predjama castle,

about a ten-minute drive from the caves.

This castle was the home of medieval knights, and it’s stayed perched on this cliff for over 800 years.

Definitely, one of the neatest and prettiest sights to see a castle in.

Absolute fairytale feels

Take a tour inside to sense what it truly was like to live as a knight.

I personally couldn’t live here, the temperature dropped as soon as we entered.

This castle felt like a freezer.

My toes were numb by the time we finished our included headset informative tour, which I’d advise to bring headphones or, if you don’t, just hold the speaker up to your ear.

The views of the landscape were obviously strategic but must’ve been beautiful to wake up to every day.

That’s where we slept and it’s feet away from the entrance of the caves.

I’m glad we were able to experience what this small Slovenia town had to offer.

It’s worth it!

  1. This sounds like a wonderful experience! It sounds like you really have to bundle up since the caves are so cold. The nearby hotel also sounds really cool!

  2. Oh wow, this would be a perfect place for me and my family to visit. We love going to places like this. That is amazing how big it is, and the place where you all stayed is just beautiful.
